How a Pressure Switch Works

This part plays a prominent part as your furnace prepares to work in your house.

Here’s what happens after your thermostat’s call for heat:

  • Your furnace’s control board begins running the draft inducer blower motor. This exhausts combustion gases from the heat exchanger and pulls in new gas and air so the burners can fire.
  • When the pressure switch senses that enough air is being pulled into the burners, it closes and commands the control board to ignite the furnace.
  • Your furnace ignites and creates heat.

What Happens When a Pressure Switch Breaks Down

When your pressure switch isn’t operating the way it should, you’ll likely hear the fan start and the switch clicking a few times before the furnace switches off completely. When a part isn’t functioning right, your furnace will turn off to protect you.

Your furnace will let you know something is incorrect with a red flash from its indicator light, which it uses to display error codes. It uses this red light to flash code, like Morse code.

You may see fast flashes or an alternating slow flash as it transmits a fault code.
