The Joseph Groh Foundation is a great organization that offers financial support to those in the construction trade who are living with life-altering injuries. Each year the organization honors numerous recipients with a grant and in 2016 the Joseph Groh Foundation was excited to present Adil Karamally as a recipient.
Adil, originally from Pakistan, received his MBA from the University of Chicago and afterwards bought ProStar Mechanical Services of Anaheim, CA and received his HVAC and general contracting license. In 2013, Adil endured a major stroke at at the age of 48. He lost the function of his left arm and the stroke left his left leg greatly impaired, resulting in foot drop. Only able to walk with a heavy brace, his muscles began to atrophy and his doctors feared that he would ultimately end up permanently in a wheelchair.
Unable to work, Adil’s wife, Laila, was their sole source of income, resulting in financial pressure on the couple with a young child in elementary and three more children in college. Their spirits were lifted when Adil was told about the WalkAid System, a device that utilizes functional electrical stimulation to help people with Adil’s condition walk again. But when they learned of the cost, Adil and Laila realized they were not able to afford the WalkAid System in addition to the extensive rehab that would be required so he could understand how to use it.
Luckily, a professional at WalkAid referred Adil and Laila to the Joseph Groh Foundation and, thanks to the wonderful grant, Adil got the WalkAid System and has already experienced wonderful success. His muscle is no longer indicating atrophy and is actually starting to regenerate, bringing hope back to Adil and Laila.
